Learning Journey #5 – Want To Play Yourself? Well You Can ‘Count On Me’

Welcome back to another learning journey! This week though, the student is becoming the teacher. That’s right, I am putting on my teacher hat and showing you how to play a fingerstyle pattern. This was something I actually learned when I began taking guitar lessons a few years ago and was one of the only things I still remembered, so I decided that it was the perfect thing to teach you all!

I’m not going to lie, I hate watching myself teach on video and it gave me a new respect for Katia, who does it every week in EDTC. What I am saying is that I am super awkward in the video, so you’ll have to forgive me, but I hope you enjoy and learn a bit about fingerpicking as well!

Also, here are the chords that I used in my video if you would like to try it out yourself:

Chords:

Count On Me – Bruno Mars

Riptide – Vance Joy

Picture representation:

Step 1: Find your chord – This will change as you play throughout your song

Guitar chord

Step 2: Pick the 5th (A) string with your thumb

Finger Picking 1

Step 3: Pick the 2nd and 3rd (B and G) strings together with your two fingers

Finger picking 2

Step 4: Pick the 4th (D) string with your thumb

Finger picking 3

Step 5: Again, pick the 2nd and 3rd (B and G) strings together with your two fingers

Finger picking 2

Repeat Steps 2-5 throughout the song. Hope you Enjoy!

  1. Caleb, I don’t think you were awkward in the video! I think you did a really great job of teaching, especially if you have never filmed yourself teaching before. I know that I have never done something like this before and it was way more difficult than it seems to be. Great job!

  2. Caleb,
You did wonderful job in teaching us.I had no idea about any of these cords. the way you taught step by step with few repeats in video and pictures in post makes it very clear to understand, thanks for doing so. And I hear you, i too felt awkward in doing so but I guess that’s because we act in front of camera. I should say you’re definitely an excellent teacher.

  3. Hey Caleb, I think you did an awesome job of explaining in the video. I feel like we’re more critical because we’re not teaching yet because I felt the same when I made my video. Anyways, I really like how you included the pictures it really gave me a clue of what was going on because I’m not the most musically inclined person. Seems like you’re getting a good grasp on the guitar, great work!
